Briar Ridge is a gated golf community that sits partly in Schererville and partly in Dyer, in Lake County. The private Briar Ridge Country Club and its 27 holes are in the middle, and homes wrap around the fairways. Main Street runs along the north side, 213th Street runs along the south, and Hart Ditch runs along the west. Some addresses read Schererville, IN 46375, and some read Dyer, IN 46311. That town line decides which set of recorded covenants you live under. Confirm the town, the covenants, and the association fees on the exact lot before you write an offer.

A golf club with a neighborhood around it

Donald S. Powers founded Briar Ridge Country Club in 1980, and the homes came up around his course. The property owners association says its recorded declarations date to the 1980s, with one set for the Dyer side and one for the Schererville side.

You can tell what came first from the street signs. Muirfield Drive, Turnberry Drive, St. Andrews Drive, Carnoustie Lane, Troon Court, Augusta Way, Ballybunion Court, Royal Dublin Lane. Nearly every street here carries the name of a famous golf course.

The photo at the top of this page is a 2022 USDA aerial over the middle of Briar Ridge. It shows fairways, sand bunkers, a pond, and homes along a curving street.

The course and the club

The course is three 9-hole layouts designed by Larry Packard, 27 holes in all. The club says they run from about 5,200 to 6,900 yards. There is a driving range, a short-game range, and practice greens. The club also hosts USGA qualifying rounds, and it lists 2026 qualifiers for the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women’s Open, and the U.S. Amateur.

The clubhouse is at 123 Country Club Drive in Schererville. The club lists a half-Olympic pool with a splash pad, four tennis courts, four pickleball courts, three bocce courts, two restaurants for members, and banquet rooms for up to 225 guests. It is a private club. Ask the club how membership works before you assume a house comes with a tee time.

Homes and streets

Briar Ridge has single-family homes, many of them on the course or on a pond, plus townhome sections. A recent townhome listing shows the fee covering lawn care, snow removal, trash, and exterior upkeep. Recent single-family listings show association fees that cover trash pickup. Golf-course, pond, and interior lots are different sales, and the neighborhood dates to the 1980s, so age and updates vary from one house to the next. Price the street and the view, not the name on the gate.

Recent listings send buyers in through the gate off Main Street on the north side or the south gate off 213th Street. From either gate, the directions in those listings run along St. Andrews Drive. Search live homes on realest.com, then check the town on each listing.

Schools (confirm by address)

Both sides of Briar Ridge are in the Lake Central School Corporation, which serves Dyer, Schererville, and St. John. Recent listings in Briar Ridge show Protsman Elementary and Kahler Middle School in Dyer and Lake Central High School in St. John. School boundaries can change, so confirm the schools for the exact address with Lake Central before you offer. We do not publish ratings here.

The POA, the gate, and the paperwork

The Briar Ridge Property Owner’s Association, Inc. runs the neighborhood side, and its office is at 1401 Main Street in Schererville. Its posted rules say every owner, occupant, and guest has to follow the declarations, the bylaws, the rules, and the ordinances of both Dyer and Schererville.

Here is the part buyers miss. The POA keeps two sets of declarations, one recorded for the Town of Dyer and one for the Town of Schererville. Read the set for your side of the line, not your neighbor’s. Ask for the current association fee, what is owed on the lot, and, if you want the club, its membership terms before you offer. Plan fences, additions, and signs around those documents too.

Sellers, read this one. Buyers here will ask for the declarations, the fee, and what the fee covers. Have them ready before you list. If you are selling, the Indiana seller’s disclosure page covers the form you will fill out.

Getting around and the week

Main Street runs right along the north side of Briar Ridge, so getting into Dyer or Schererville takes a few minutes. The Illinois line is a short drive west. Drive your real commute from the gate you would use, at the hour you would leave, before you buy.

Inside the gates the week runs on the course, the pool, the courts, and dinner at the club. For everything else, Schererville and Dyer are right outside.

The tradeoffs to weigh

  • The course, the club, and the gate are the draw. You pay association fees for the neighborhood, and the club is private on top of that.
  • One neighborhood, two towns. Your mailing address and your set of covenants depend on which side of the line the lot sits.
  • Golf-course, pond, and interior lots are different sales. Price the view you are buying.
  • The neighborhood dates to the 1980s. Expect different ages and updates on the same street.
  • Every guest, mover, and contractor comes through a gate. Some people love that. Some find it slows a moving day.

Who it fits

  • Buyers who want a golf course out the back window and are fine with association rules.
  • Families who want Lake Central schools and will confirm the school for the exact address.
  • Movers from Illinois who want a gated neighborhood close to the state line and will drive the commute first.
  • Sellers who want a shop that knows the gate routine and has the Dyer and Schererville paperwork straight.
